Competition/Purchase

This project reacts to the two different structures of the neighborhood. On one hand it follows the right-angled grid of the existing campus, on the other hand the row-like structure of the neighboring housing development. The result is a fan-shaped structure that opens to the south.

The new Johannes Kepler Square is the joint of the old and new university.

On the west side the new center is defined by the existing campus, Auhof castle and the mature trees.

On the south side it is bordered by the newly created auditorium, exhibition and lecture building. Behind this central building (phase 5), the individual buildings of the different phases fan out.

This positioning of the buildings allows the free movement of air (without any barriers) that is essential for the microclimate of the area.  A change in level of approximately 4.5 meters within the site is exploited to make an underground plinth on the north side that accommodates the garage and technical services.

The central cross connection is situated at the edge of this change of level; in front of it is the central approach road. This road is spanned by  "bridges" formed by individual building units. These bridges rest on 3-story single buildings, which, in terms of scale and position, respond to the neighboring housing development.
