Expert's process Base data: Flight Security Center: Vienna Airport needs a clear symbol that works during the day and the night. A clear-cut singular vertical form with a recognizable silhouette and a uniform structure provides the starting point. The main visible focus of the tower is underlined by the drop-like “Wankel” form. This form accentuates the slenderness of the tower, lending the view of the tower experienced by passers-by a dynamic quality. The structural idea is a tube-in-tube system consisting of an outer skin and an inner core that are linked together. The further up the building one goes the larger the openings in the skin become, and the more the load bearing function is taken over by the core. The texture of the outer tube soon dissolves into a vertical column structure. Those columns taper as they rise upwards until they transform from concrete columns into a fragile steel construction.
